In the United States, more than 400 doctors take their own lives each year — and that’s stirring up concern within Canada’s medical community.

Dr. Derek Puddester, the associate medical director of the Ontario Medical Association’s Physician Health Program, says we need to take steps here in Canada to address the fact that physicians have a higher risk of suicide.

Puddester points out that physicians face the same day-to-day struggles as other Canadians, but they also work in a part of society “that is full of pain and tragedy” — where they witness “truly horrific” episodes of trauma and loss.

Medical schools across the country are looking at ways to remove the stigma of mental health issues, and encourage physicians to seek help without feeling ashamed or embarrassed.

The Ontario Medical Association’s Physician Health Program provides a list of mental health resources, including ways to cope with the stress of medical practice, how to recognize the risks, and where to reach out for help.
