FAMILY MEDICINE (HOSPITALIST)– MONCTON AREA

POSITION DESCRIPTION:
Our client in the Moncton area
is seeking Family Physician Hospitalists to expand our Hospitalist Program. Hospitalists are responsible for providing comprehensive inpatient care for assigned patients admitted to our institution or transferred from specialty services for appropriate family medicine care.

The position is typically shared between two physicians working 7 days on/7 days off. The schedule is evolving and negotiable. Physicians are on-call every other night while on duty and receive a mandated on-call stipend. There is fee-for-service billing for any call-backs to the hospital while on-call after regular working hours. Scheduling vacation/absences would be determined within the group which will have responsibility to maintain ongoing coverage.

The hospital is a 386-bed tertiary and critical care facility within Horizon Health Network. It is a major referral hospital that serves communities throughout New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island, and northern Nova Scotia. Most major services and subspecialties are available: general surgery (including hepatobiliary), thoracic surgery, vascular surgery, interventional radiology, major orthopedics, neurosurgery and neuroradiology, ENT, urology, high-risk obstetrics (approximately 1400 deliveries per year), gynecology, and plastic surgery (including burns). The Moncton Hospital is a level 2 provincial referral trauma center. The intensive care unit has a 10-bed medical-surgery unit and a 6-bed neurosurgical unit.

The hospital offers excellent opportunities for teaching and clinical research and has an academic affiliation with Dalhousie University and Memorial University of Newfoundland. The hospital is one of the largest employers within metro Moncton, employing 3,000 staff and physicians.

JOB DUTIES:

  • Provide inpatient care for unattached patients admitted to our institution or transferred from specialty services for appropriate family medicine care.
  • Ensure adequate coverage for patients during times of absence, as defined by the Department Rules.
  • Coverage would be divided into seven-day stretches with full-time coverage being seven days on duty followed by seven days off duty (minimum of 1 in 2 weeks unless agreed to by physician and team).
  • Scheduling vacation/absences will be determined with the group which will have the responsibility to maintain ongoing coverage.
  • In case of illness or absence, team members will provide backup. If not available, a group of family doctors could help with coverage.
  • Maximum of 20-25 patients per group at any point.
  • Will make every effort to find ongoing care for patients upon discharge but are not responsible for patients without a family doctor once they are discharged from the hospital.
  • Honour consultation requests in a timely manner.
  • Provide telephone consultation to colleagues.
  • Teaching responsibilities for residents and medical students.
  • Teaching responsibilities for nursing and peers as appropriate.
  • Participate in departmental meetings, Medical Quality Improvement Committee, and other appropriate family practice and hospital committees.
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to address staff and patient education needs.
  • Practice in a collaborative fashion as a member of an interdisciplinary team and consult with members of other health professions as appropriate.
  • Participate in the use of departmental and corporate evidence-based rules of practice to ensure that expected standards of care are achieved.
  • Adhere to call responsibilities as defined by the department. On-call response time is 10 minutes to answer your pager and be accessible to attend at the bedside within 30 minutes unless alternative arrangements are defined by the Department Rules.
  • Participate in the medical practice that is compatible with the Health Authority’s mission, values, and strategic directions.
  • Within the confines of this scope of practice and position description, provide other duties that may arise by circumstance and may be required by the Head of the Department of Pediatrics, the Chief of Staff, and/or Medical Director.
MAINTENANCE OF PRIVILEGES:
  • Adhering to the Regional Health Authority By-Laws, and the Rules & Regulations that are delineated for your department.
  • Maintaining complete and accurate patient care records and adhering to the provincial legislation to complete all hospital patient charts within 30 days of discharge.
  • Undergoing annual performance evaluation process for reappointment of privileges as provincially legislated. This is based on the following criteria:
  • Evaluation by the Clinical Head of the department which includes an informal peer-review process.
  • Regular attendance at departmental and medical staff meetings as per the By-Laws.
  • Documented proof of maintenance of competency, adhering to or equivalent to specialty association standards.
TEACHING:

Regional Health Authority B is affiliated with Dalhousie University of Nova Scotia and Memorial University of Newfoundland. You will be eligible for a teaching appointment with Dalhousie University based on the recommendation of your department’s Clinical Head. Remuneration for academic activity is as per the existing agreements with the Province of New Brunswick, Medical Education, Regional Health Authority B, and your clinical department, and is distributed at the discretion of the Clinical Head in a fair and equitable manner.

RESEARCH:

You are encouraged to pursue research opportunities. The Moncton Hospital will attempt to support you in this endeavor.

REMUNERATION:
Remuneration is $152-168/hour sessional rate x 8 hours per day. The rate is based on performance and can be retroactive.  Positions are typically shared between two physicians working 7 days on/7 days off.  The schedule is evolving and negotiable.  Physicians are on-call every other night while on duty and receive a mandated on-call stipend.  There is fee-for-service billing for any call-backs to the hospital while on-call after regular working hours. 

SCHEDULE:
A minimum of four physicians are required to share the responsibility. Coverage would be divided into seven-day stretches with full-time coverage being seven days on duty followed by seven days off duty. Scheduling vacation/ absences would be determined with the group which will have the responsibility to maintain ongoing coverage.

EXPECTED START DATE:
• As soon as possible.

QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be eligible to hold a valid license with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New Brunswick.
  • CCFP or FRCPC certification.
  • Must hold LMCC.
  • In circumstances where no qualified Canadian trained applicants are available, equivalent certification may be considered as long as they qualify for licensure in the Province of New Brunswick. 
  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support is preferred.
  • Excellent communication, interpersonal and team-building skills.
  • Excellent attendance and work record.
